Insight Inspection: Ethiopia

Welcome to Ethiopia, the land of origins! Ethiopia is one of Africa's oldest countries and is famous for its coffee and many archeological sites.

Ethiopia traces its origins as far back as 2000 years ago. Although, evidence shows that the land has been inhabited for even longer. (Fun fact: Ethiopia has never been colonized!) As one can imagine, the country has its fair share of archeological wonders. The most famous one of these being the Rock-Hewn Churches, found in the town of Lalibela (laa·lee·beh·luh). This is a series of churches that have been cut out of rock. No bricks, no wood, just pure carved stone.

Ethiopia is also known as the birthplace of coffee. This crop is very important to the country. Being the world's seventh largest producer of coffee, 60% of foreign income is generated from the plant. Coffee is also used as a way to bring people closer to each other. Ethiopians will often host coffee gatherings or stations, many times right after another party. The coffee is distributed in clay pots and handleless cups called Sinis. The ritual signifies friendship, respect, and hospitality.

While western media is widely found and enjoyed in Ethiopia, the country has its fair share of entertainment to appreciate as well. When looking at sports, Ethiopia's soccer scene is big, being the nation's most popular sport. As for music, jazz is beloved. They even have their own style called Ethio-jazz, which is improvisational jazz combined with traditional Ethiopian music.

Ethiopia's culture is rich and vast, containing many different aspects. From their history and food to their music and sports, there's something for everyone to learn and enjoy.
